We have summarized the tourism support measures to date, along with an overview and latest information on national travel support.
The National Travel Support (National Travel Discount), which started on October 2022, 10, aims to revitalize the travel industry and domestic travel, which have suffered significant economic damage due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. This is a support project for tourism businesses announced by the Japan Tourism Agency. The government will provide support for the costs necessary to grant discounts on travel products and accommodation services in each prefecture, as well as regional coupons that can be used to pay for meals and shopping.
Nationwide travel support will begin on October 10th under the name "National Travel Discount," and the initial target period was set to end in late December. On November 11, 12, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Saito announced at a press conference that travel support nationwide would continue after the new year after assessing the infection situation of the new coronavirus.
Because the year-end and New Year holidays, when demand for tourism is high, are not covered, nationwide travel support in 2022 will only be available until December 12th (for stays on December 28th).
Following the announcement by Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Saito on December 2022, 12, and Prime Minister Kishida's New Year's press conference on January 13, 2023, it was decided that nationwide travel support would resume from January 1, 4.
Nationwide travel support was scheduled to end in prefectures that have used up the budget allocated by the national government. The Japan Tourism Agency investigated the remaining budget status of each prefecture and found that almost all prefectures nationwide have a remaining budget until the end of March 2023, and it is expected that most prefectures will be able to continue providing support from April onwards. Therefore, we have decided to extend nationwide travel support beyond April only for prefectures with remaining budgets.Depending on the region, it is expected that nationwide travel support will continue until around summer. For example, Okinawa Prefecture's travel support ``Okinawa Color Discovery Campaign NEXT'' has been announced to be extended until July 3, 4.
However, the discount is expected to be ineligible for ``reservations made before the nationwide travel support sale (existing reservations)'' and ``during the Golden Week period (4/29 to 5/7).''
Support for tourism businesses was originally provided in 2020 as "GoTo Travel."However, due to the further spread of the new coronavirus, it has been suspended nationwide since December 2020.
“Prefectural Discount” was launched on April 2021, 4 as an alternative measure to GoTo Travel. In prefectures where the infection status is at Stage II or below, the government will provide support for the costs necessary to provide discounts on travel products and accommodation services, as well as coupons, etc.
From April 2021, 4, when the project started, to March 1, 2022, subsidies were limited to travel within the prefecture or travel from neighboring prefectures. From April 3st, the entire country will be divided into six regions, and travel to prefectures within the same region will be covered.Initially, the implementation period was set to be until July 31, 4 (for those checking out on July 1), as it was based on the switch to "nationwide travel support" that covers the whole country from around mid-July.However, due to the spread of the new coronavirus, the implementation of nationwide travel support has been postponed for the time being. The period will be extended until the end of August 6, and will be extended again until September 7th (for check-outs on October 2022st) as ``Looking at the current infection situation, we are not in a situation where we can begin nationwide travel support.'' It has been announced.
After that, it was officially decided that the nationwide travel support program would start on October 10th, and the prefectural resident discount was implemented until October 11th (for check-outs on October 10th), the day before the switchover to the national travel discount.
There will be no changes to the discount rate or maximum discount amount for the National Travel Support extension after April.
<Nationwide travel support (from January 1th)>
・Implementation period: January 1th - Ends as soon as the budget set by each prefecture is exhausted
・Discount rate: 20% OFF travel price (maximum amount: 5 yen for accommodation with transportation, 3 yen for overnight stays other than those listed on the right)
・Regional coupon: 2 yen worth on weekdays, XNUMX yen worth on holidays (regional coupons are generally issued as electronic coupons)
