Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture

The Rainbow Pine Grove in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, is a beautiful pine grove stretching in an arc along Karatsu Bay, measuring approximately 4.5 km in length and 500 m in width.
It was originally planted by Terazawa Shimanokami Hirotaka, the first lord of the Karatsu domain, in the early Edo period to protect against wind and tide, and today it is home to approximately one million black pines. It is counted as one of Japan's three greatest pine groves, along with Miho no Matsubara and Kehi no Matsubara, and has also been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government. It is a spectacular spot that represents Karatsu, and was ranked fifth in NHK's "Japanese Landscapes to Preserve in the 21st Century." The "Seven Wonders" that have been passed down since ancient times are also one of the joys of traveling.
